AMD, which I no longer present and which for a long time sold only processors of all kinds before extending to graphics cards, has also recently offered other types of products, such as memory and SSDs! And yes AMD SSDs, well rather OCZ SSDs with the AMD logo affixed on it because as we will see later the 2 logos are present on the product.
A product manufactured by a regular on the market, AMD has therefore chosen security and should offer an SSD with very good performance, let’s see it all more closely!

AMD’s R7 SSDs are therefore in 2.5 ″ format with a weight of 115g which denotes a very massive carcass unlike the Plextor M6S tested previously. Sata 3 interface with theoretical maximum speeds of 550 MB / s for all models and from 470 MB / s to 530 MB / s depending on the model which represents the current standard, to see in practice! The integrated controller is an Indilinx Barefoot 3 M00 present in the OCZ Vector 150 supported by Nand Toshiba A19nm MLC (like the plextor M6S).
The MTBF of 2.3 million hours as well as the 4-year warranty should ensure a certain durability of the SSD, the prices ranging from 75 € for the 120GB model to 195 € for the 480GB model are in turn in the range. average. Let’s see what the R7 240GB has in its belly!

The box of the R7 240GB is very sober with a mixture of red and black, the logo and the model are engraved in silver letters in the corners. A photo of the SSD is also present as well as a sticker at the bottom right showing the capacity of the beast.

Here is the contents of the box, there are fixing screws, an installation manual, the SSD (still happy!) As well as a 2.5 ″ to 3.5 ″ adapter which can be very practical if the box does not. is not equipped with 2.5 ″ slot.

  • SSD: Intel Postville X25-M 80Go (OS)
  • Food: be quiet! E9 580CM
  • Operating system: Windows 8.1 64bits

The AMD R7 240 GB will be tested against the SSDs that I have at my disposal, ie a Samsung 830 128 GB and a Plextor M6S 256 GB!

ATTO Disk Benchmark

In reading under ATTO Disk Benchmark we see that the SSD from OCZ AMD ranks first in almost all the tests, but it hits the nail on the head for files under 2KB and is far behind by the Plextor M6S 256GB SSD. The results are very good on files over 128KB with over 550MB / s, so the maximum theoretical throughput is reached here.

In writing once again, the AMD R7 240GB takes the lead with a maximum of 535.7 MB / s, which corresponds to the manufacturer’s theoretical maximum speed. The Samsung 830 here is no match with barely more than 220 MB / s maximum, it accuses the weight of years!
I remind you that this remains benchmarks and does not reflect the everyday feeling in terms of responsiveness, which will be more or less the same on all current SSDs.

AS SSD

Under AS SSD Benchmark the AMD R7 240GB is always ahead in reading or writing, except once again when it comes to reading small 4KB files.

CrystalDiskMark

Once again, the AMD R7 240GB once again takes the lead in all benchmarks, apart from reading small files where it does less well than the Plextor, in writing there is no picture it is good faster and even better than reading.

HD Tune Pro

Under HD Tune Pro the result changes radically and sees the AMD R7 240GB last in reading with an average of 309.5 MB / s compared to the 391 MB / s of the Samsung 830 and 398 MB / s of the Plextor M6S, in writing on the other hand with 365 Mo / s it remains first by far.

As we can see the results under PCMark8 are almost identical for the 3 SSDs, with results ranging from 4924 for the 240GB AMD R7 to 4954 for the Plextor M6S there is not much difference. All SSDs are capable of providing equivalent performance in all tests performed by PCMark8.

Practical Tests

Let’s move on to the practice tests now! For this I will use 2 scenarios, a copy of a 14.1 GB directory made up of 88 Folders and 12,647 files of various sizes and a copy of a single 15.3 GB file.
The source files are first copied to a RAMDisk (more information here) and then sent to the different SSDs, in this way there will logically be no clamping at the source level.

Yet first in the benchmarks, the AMD R7 240GB is ultimately on a par with the Plextor M6S when it comes to copying the directory or even the large 15.3 GB file. Only the Samsung is far behind when copying the due file. at its writing speed much lower than the other 2.
In the end in real conditions there is almost no visible difference in use between the Plextor and the AMD.

Here we are at the end of this test, what to say about the SSD OCZ AMD R7 240Go?
The performance of the R7 240 GB in the benchmarks is very good, many times surpassing all other SSDs in today’s test, especially in write. In the end, however, and in practice, all SSDs will be very difficult to differentiate in everyday tasks, only the results of benchmarks will allow us to say that one SSD is faster than another.
Offered at a price of 122 € with a 4-year warranty (for 30GB of data per day), the SSD from AMD is average and should satisfy future buyers, particularly in a gamer configuration.
