Test – Asus ROG GTX 1080 From Poseidon Platinum
| Specs | Price

Hi all!

A new graphics card being tested today at Conseil Config, and not just any ladies and gentlemen, the GTX 1080 Ti ROG Poseidon Platinum from Asus! Under this marketing name is of course the flagship consumer from NVIDIA, a GTX 1080 Ti. The Poseidon models from Asus have always liked water, today’s card follows the trend with a hybrid aircooling / watercooling system, it is able to work both with and without a dedicated watercooling system. Of course, here we are not talking about an entry-level model with an acceptable price for the common people, it will be necessary to shed about 1000 € to leave with, which will clearly be a brake for a very large majority of users. , let’s see what it gives in practice!

The Asus GTX 1080 Ti ROG Poseidon Platinum card therefore embeds a Pascal GTX 1080 Ti graphics chip from NVIDIA, engraved in 16 nm. The default operating frequency is 1594 MHz for a boost of 1708 MHz, in practice however and as we will see later these figures are much higher, frequency which will be limited by the TDP of 275 Watts as well as the temperature under load . The memory is 11 GB of GDDR5X, enough to see coming without being limited in games, even with the graphics options at maximum.
The beast is a good big monster with a length of 29.8 cm for 15.8 high and 5 cm thick, it will therefore take more than 2 slots in the case, to be taken into consideration if you want to buy 2. to put them in SLI (if your wallet is too heavy and must be shed 😉). The power is of course entrusted to 2 PCIe 8-pin connectors, quite normal seeing the TDP of the card.
Some additional features have been added by Asus, such as the RGB Logo as well as a small window equipped with a logo and infinite effect LEDs as can be found on the In Win 805 Infinity box. There are also 2 4-pin PWM connectors for external fans (which will therefore be controlled by the graphics card) as well as a connector for an LED strip.
As I said the ventilation system is a hybrid model, you can either use it in Aircooling as it is or connect the card to a custom water-cooling system to lower the temperatures as much as possible without having to buy a separate waterblock (and to lose the warranty at the same time, 3 years). This could be interesting for those who already have a water-cooling system, or who want to go without having to buy everything.
Offered at a price of around 1000 €, the card from Asus is clearly not cheap, it is even the most expensive GTX 1080 Ti on the market, but the hybrid cooling system may be able to make it stand out, let’s see that!

Box and bundle

ROG forces the box to display the brand’s “gamer” colors, red and black of course! On the front we find the logo of the brand, the name of the model as well as the GPU used, rather sober and devoid of excessive marketing. At the back, a table showing the technical characteristics, a diagram of the connectors available as well as a small marketing corner promoting the merits of the hybrid system.

When opening the box we come across a thick foam with the drivers and the various manuals in its center, below the beast is installed in another thick foam, it is clear that the transport should not pose the slightest problem. , still happy for a 1000 € card!

The bundle consists of a DVD of drivers, a quick installation manual, 2 adapters 2 x 6-pin -> 1 x 8-pin, 2 Asus ROG Velcro cable ties and a sticker plate ROG that will please fans 😉

The map

Here is the beast! Suffice to say that we are facing a really impressive graphics card, not as much as some models but with 30 cm in length, more than 2 slots thick and 16 cm in height it is not to be pitied! The first thing that strikes you when handling is its weight, indeed with almost 2 kg on the scale it will weigh down the case 😀. There are 2 9.2 cm fans responsible for cooling the radiator, in addition to the 2 nozzles for watercooling.

At the back a backplate is present, equipped with the ROG logo which will light up in the color you want 😉 In addition to that the model is of course present in order to mount all the graphics card that you have in your PC!

The watercooling part has 4 openings, in front or behind the card according to your needs, note that when using a watercooling system you will have to leave in place the metal caps (silver) and not the plastic models ( black) that are not waterproof. Each cap proudly displays the ROG logo dear to so many fans 😉 The brand for compatibility with most custom water cooling systems has chosen a G 1/4 ″ thread, used in large majority.

On the slice Asus has released the big game, in addition of course to the watercooling part and the name of the model, the brand has added a small window which will light up when powered up with an infinity effect like on the In win 805 Infinity. Rather than explaining what it looks like you might as well show yourself directly:

The LEDs are of course RGB 😉 As we can see the effect is really successful and will delight Christmas tree fans, at the top in a box with window 😀

The power is of course via 2 8-pin ports, it is necessary to supply the 275 Watts requested by the beast!

The connection is complete, with 2 x HDMI, 2 x DisplayPort and 1 x DVI-D, enough to connect a significant number of screens (or a VR headset).

We undress the map

The PCB is identical to the brand’s GTX 1080 Ti Strix, only the cooling system differs.

A little more nice is the presence of 2 4-pin connectors for external fans, they will be linked to the GPU temperatures and will start up according to the ventilation curve of the graphics card (automatically or manually depending on your needs. settings). This will allow, for example, to operate fans installed in the box according to the temperature of the card, fans of silence (or performance) will appreciate.
A connector for RGB LED strips is also present, for a more furnished Christmas tree!

Here is the cooling system, some heat pipes in contact with the aluminum fins as well as another heat pipe passing around the GPU and which is connected to the 2 holes which will be used for the water cooling system. Here we are faced with a rather well-made hybrid cooling system mixing aircooling and watercooling.
On the other hand, if the card is only air-cooled, it should not be as efficient as a system designed solely for this, nor will it be as efficient as a pure and hard water block.
