The Alphabet Incubator, whose task is to solve the most difficult global challenges related to security, has just presented a new tool. Its mission is to defend against attacks on freedom of speech around the world.
The application protects users from DNS manipulation, which is a common practice among repressive countries. They are designed to prevent users from accessing information that the government deems inappropriate. In Iran, for example, some sites redirect to the government censorship site. In Pakistan, too, this practice is commonplace. And that’s just the beginning of the list. The way it works is that when DNS servers query a site, if it is on a blacklist, DNS gives a fake response with the wrong IP address, resulting in a government-friendly site.
According to CNET, DNS queries are to be encrypted in the new version of Android 9.0. However, not every smartphone will get it. That is why the Intra application was created, which anyone can download from Google Play and install. Thanks to it, freedom of speech should become something normal.
