The AMD Instinct MI250X will feature dual die, 220 CUs, 128GB of HBM2e, and 500W TDP

AMD’s new line of Instinct MI200 computer cards will mark the debut of the CDNA2 architecture with dual DIE GPUs, and the specs for the top-of-the-line model, the Instinct MI250X, have been leaked, revealing that it will be an absolute beast.

As revealed by ExecutableFix, This computer card will have 110 CUs (Computing Units) with a frequency of 1.7GHz, 128GB of HBM2e memory, and a TDP of 500W. For comparison, Navi 21 has 80 CUs, so this new GPU will have an additional 30 CUs. While this sounds impressive, there is more in the following tweet:

In a later clarification, ExecutableFix said that it is pretty sure that the 110 CUs are per DIE and not in total as the first tweet implied, having a total of 220 CUs or 14080 Stream Processors between its two DIEs, which will make it a real beast. when it comes to performing high-performance computing tasks.

This theory of the 220 CUs is reinforced by seeing that will reach 47.9 TFLOPs, since doing the calculation of the TFLOPs with 220 CUs at 1.7GHz (2 * 14080 * 1700), the account gives that it will have 47,872 TFLOPs, or 47.9 when rounded to one decimal place, coinciding with what ExecutableFix assured.

The Instinct MI200 computer cards are expected to be announced early next year, looking to compete with Intel’s Ponte Vecchio and Nvidia’s Nvidia H100 in the high-performance computing market.

What do you think about the specs of the Instinct MI250X? Would you like to see something similar for gaming in the future?
