When it is time to plow a field, sow or spray fertilizer, the owners of huge fields have their hands full and tedious driving. That’s why companies around the world began trying to automate the process by ditching the driver for the system, and that’s exactly what one of the world’s largest agricultural equipment companies did with the unveiling of the first John Deere automatic tractor.

While it may seem like a John Deere automated tractor is something completely new these days, it actually already operates on some farms around the world and is available for purchase. At CES 2022, the company advertised it more, boasting that it gave farmers a tool that allows them to “do more with less”.

John Deere spoke at his press conference about how his robotic tractor will make future farmers able to feed a growing global population. All this with fewer workers, less agricultural land and, in addition, reducing pollutant emissions.

The automated tractor was based on the existing John Deere 8R design. It is equipped with a TruSet plow, a GPS guidance system, a set of six pairs of optical cameras and a system that enables 360-degree obstacle detection and determination of the distance to them. Of course, it will also be able to operate with other equipment.

It uses artificial intelligence (neural network), which classifies each pixel in about 100 milliseconds and determines whether the machine is to continue driving or stop depending on whether an obstacle has been detected. Additionally, it can identify weeds and crops, reacting accordingly or reporting their location to the farmer.
