Synology, a company best known for its NAS, today announced its router Synology RT6600ax, which will be the first router on the market that supports the new 5.9 GHz band known as UNII-4 WiFi, which is an extension of the 802.11ax / WiFi 6 band and is not related to the WiFi 6E, which uses the 6 GHz band.

UNII-4 only adds a total of four 20 MHz WiFi channels, but the key here is that it allows a third 160 MHz channel wide, something that could be useful in congested places. For now, the UNII-4 band can only be used in the United States, although it is likely that more countries will consider opening additional frequencies for the use of WiFi. That said, it is unlikely that Europe and Japan will allow it, as neither region supports the UNII-3 frequency band.

Little else do we know about Synology RT6600axSince the company did not disclose its hardware, but could use Qualcomm hardware, it will achieve data transfer speeds of up to 6600 Mbps, we can see a 6 antenna layout, a 2.5Gbps port, 3x Gigabit Lan, Gigabyte Wan, a full-size USB 3.0 port, and it will be released during the first half of 2022.
