The multi-functional Oerlikon AMMR radar from Rheinmetall Italia

The Italian subsidiary of the German company Rheinmetall has developed the new Oerlikon AMMR (AESA Multi-Mission Radar). This one is designed to detect threats mainly in the form of drones over short and very short distances (SHORAD and VSHORAD), but it can deal with a much wider range of activities.

The Oerlikon AMMR radar is the most modern and future-proof equipment for detecting air threats at close range

The press release published by the manufacturer mentions that Oerlikon AMMR effectively detects and identifies micro and mini unmanned aerial vehicles, rocket, artillery and high-angle attack mortar (C-RAM) missiles, as well as anti-aircraft and maneuvering missiles simultaneously. All this thanks to the adaptive, fully digital S-band beamforming techniques and the fact that it is essentially “a state-of-the-art modular radar offering high performance and ease of use, as well as the possibility of integration with a wide range of platforms”.

The Oerlikon AMMR is designed to operate in stationary or moving mode even in hazardous environments and jamming conditions. It is additionally equipped with state-of-the-art electronic countermeasures (ESM) and will be easily upgradeable in the future to keep pace with changing threat scenarios. We also know that the Oerlikon AMMR is now ready for serial production.
