The powerful NVIDIA supercomputers will power two supercomputers

NVIDIA does not yet supply its latest professional hardware (Hopper GPUs and Grace CPUs). We know, however, that these will go to at least two new supercomputers and will usher in a new era on the professional market.

NVIDIA has just announced that its Grace CPU Superchip and Grace Hopper Superchip will power two supercomputers. What is certain is that one of them will be an entirely supercomputer Deerprepared by the National Laboratory of the Department of Energy (DOE) in Los Alamos. This equipment will be a flagship in the hands of this research unit and will only use Grace chips that will provide up to ten “AI exaflops” of performance. As far as we know, it will be equipped with a combination of two 144-core Grace Superchip processors and a single CPU + GPU Hopper in the form of a Grace Hopper Superchip.

The second supercomputer to use Grace’s systems will be Alps. This one already belongs to the Swiss National Computing Center and has been operating for a long time, so this time its update will come into play, which will include the Grace CPU in the HPE Cray EX cabinets. This supercomputer is already operating as a general purpose machine for the research community, and will provide a whopping 20 AI exaflops when upgraded. This is hardly surprising, as NVIDIA proudly claims that the Grace processor will be the fastest processor on the market when it launches in early 2023.
