The computer systems of BroadOn, the company in charge of designing both the hardware and software of the Nintendo Wii, were violated, and an enormous amount of confidential information was found about several of the consoles of the Japanese game company: The Nintendo 64 , the Gamecube, and the Wii.
The leak includes files in Verilog (A hardware description language) about all the components of the console, allowing practically to replicate your hardware, and also all the source code of the operating systems, debug roms, and a lot of documentation that would practically allow make replicas of these consoles capable of running original games without problem, so Nintendo should not be happy at all.
Luckily all this information is related to consoles that are hardly used, and most do not even have an internet connection, so users should not be in much danger if a vulnerability is found. It will be interesting to see if this also helps the development of emulators, since with all the original information it will be much easier to see in detail how these consoles work.
Nintendo has not yet made an official statement on the matter, although we hope it will make a statement soon revealing the seriousness of the situation.
What do you think about these leaks? What impact do you think they will have?
