The US allowed Poland to spend $ 6 billion on Abrams tanks

In July last year, we learned that Poland would buy Abrams tanks from the USA. We already knew then that the first M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 will arrive in 2022, it will take around two years to complete the order, and the receipt of over 250 Abrams will provide us with one of the most powerful armored forces in Europe. The US State Department recently approved this purchase, allowing Poland to spend $ 6 billion on Abrams tanks.

A year ago, proud announcements about the purchase of tanks did not mean that Poland was already given the green light. It received this only recently, when, after analyzing the “sense” of selling the latest version of the Abrams, the relevant instances gave their consent to it, and it was granted for a reason, taking into account the current situation on the Ukrainian border.

The recent announcement comes after leading Republicans in Congress last month pressed to accelerate the proposed sale of Abrams tanks, precisely in light of the escalation of the crisis with Russia. Although it is doubtful that Poland will send possible Abrams to Ukraine, with such reinforced armored units our country will be a better deterrent to Russia from the attack.

As a reminder, Poland submitted an application for the purchase of 250 M1A2SEPv3 Abrams tanks, 250 AN / VLQ-12 CREW Duke systems for combating improvised explosives, 26 M88A2 HERCULES Combat Recovery vehicles and 17 M1110 assault bridges. We also plan to purchase, under the contract, 276 M2 50 caliber machine guns, 500 M240C 7.62 mm machine guns as well as other equipment and parts needed to service weapons systems.
