There was a new attack on the Verge network, $ 1.79 million was stolen.

Ocminer, who is the administrator of the Supernova mining pool, announced that there was an attack on the Verge network, he announced this on the forum. Bitcointalk.org, he also wrote on the forum about the April cyberattack. This time, the attackers used the same exploit, but this time the damage was much higher. Ocminer recently explained what flaws the Verge code has, and told how they can be used to perform similar attacks:

Usually, to successfully mine XVG, each next block must have a different algorithm, for example scrypt, then x17, then lyra, etc. Given a few bugs in the XVG code, you can use this function to mine blocks with a fake timestamp. When you send a mined block (like a malicious miner or pool) with a false timestamp (for example, one hour behind), then XVG “thinks” of the last block as mined on this algorithm an hour ago. Your next block will have the correct time, which will allow you to add a block to the main chain that was supposedly an hour ago – at least that’s what the network will think.

Thus, an attacker was able to mine thousands of blocks in a few seconds and earn millions of XVG in a very short period of time.

Verge representatives do not confirm the scope or nature of the attack and refer it to DDos against some XVG mining pools.
