Video Card for Mining – We consider the best video cards suitable for mining in 2019 – the main characteristics and price of models, their hashrate, profitability on different coins, payback periods.
Mining on video cards is a classic method of cryptocurrency mining, in which computing operations are performed by trusses: equipment from several boards (4–12 pieces), a powerful power supply (from 1000 W and above), as well as auxiliary technical elements (processor, hard disk, RAM) required for operation.
For several years, this method of mining digital coins was the main one, but over the past 2 years, the complexity of mining has greatly increased, more productive Asics appeared, sharpened to work on a specific algorithm, and the rate of popular assets fell dramatically, making the use of farms ineffective. So, is video card mining a thing of the past and no longer relevant? We will try to find the answer to this question today.
List of the most powerful video cards for mining in 2019
Here we have identified the best models that produce the highest hashrate on the most popular algorithms:

Video card model | Hashreit | Power consumption | Price |
Radeon RX Vega 56 | Ethash – 36.5 Mh / s; NeoScrypt — 1600 Kx / s; Zhash – 34 H / s; X16R – 10 Mx / s; CNFast – 3600 H / s. | 200–250 W (depending on the algorithm) | In Russia – 26 630 rubles. In Ukraine – 12,000 hryvnia. |
Radeon RX Vega 64 | Ethash – 40 Mh / s; NeoScrypt – 2000 Kx / s; Zhash – 38 H / s; X16R – 12 Mx / s; CNFast – 3700 H / s. | 220–270 W | In Russia – 38,200 rubles. In Ukraine – from 15 288 hryvnia. |

NVidia GeForce RTX 2080 | Ethash – 36.9 Mh / s; NeoScrypt – 2350 Kx / s; Zhash – 74 H / s; X16R – 29 Mx / s; CNFast – 1650 H / s. | 130–190 W | In Russia – 65,490 rubles. In Ukraine – about 26,000 hryvnia. |
NVidia GeForce GTX 2080Ti | Ethash – 52.5 Mh / s; NeoScrypt – 2800 Kx / s; Zhash – 90 H / s; X16R – 36 Mx / s; CNFast – 2300 H / s. | 160–220 W | In Russia – 97,990 rubles. In Ukraine – about 44,000 hryvnia. |
In this list, we did not indicate the NVidia GeForce RTX 2060 motherboard, because even at the research stage it showed rather low results for its price.
As for the cost (and this is extremely important when calculating the payback period), then we have the following situation:
- The price of Radeon cards, as well as the cost of all models in UAH, is indicated by the average of several popular stores.
- The ruble price tag of NVidia boards is taken directly from the company’s official website. Although often there is no required card on the official resource, so beginner miners will most likely have to pay more.
Mining profitability on video cards in 2019 using different algorithms
The information below is collected at the time of this writing (03/29/2019). The calculations were carried out as follows:
- For the miscalculation the calculator of whattomine.com service was used.
- To calculate the net profit, we took the average cost of electricity for the residents of Moscow. It is 5.47 rubles / kWh. But since the service is calculated in dollars, we indicated an amount of 0.083 USD / 1 kWh (at the exchange rate at the time of writing).
- In the case of all video card models, virtual trusses for 6 boards were used.
- In the payback period takes into account only the cost of video cards (excluding the rest of the iron, as well as support costs). In addition, for convenience, the prices of the cards were converted to dollars at the rate at the time of this writing.
Now go directly to the calculations!
Mining on the Ethash algorithm

We decided to consider this algorithm in the first place, since Ether is extracted on it – the second most popular cryptocurrency. Until the end of 2019, it will definitely be possible to mine (right up to the transition to PoS). Although even after changing the protocol, the miners will have a spare airfield in the form of Ethereum Classic.
So, in working at Ethash, our virtual farms produced the following result:
Model | USD price | Total hashrate / power | Profit day / month USD |
Radeon RX Vega 56 | 2,436 | 219 Mx / s – 1260 W | 0.53 / 15.9 |
Radeon RX Vega 64 | 3,595 | 240 Mx / s – 1380 W | 0.59 / 17.7 |
NVidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti | 5,745 | 297 Mx / s – 1140 W | 1.86 / 55.8 |
NVidia GeForce RTX 2070 | 4,572 | 221.4 Mx / s – 900 W | 1.29 / 38.7 |
NVidia GeForce RTX 2080 | 5,994 | 221.4 Mx / s – 1140 W | 0.81 / 24.3 |
NVidia GeForce GTX 2080Ti | 8,964 | 315 Mx / s – 1320 W | 1.76 / 52.8 |
As for payback periods, for almost all video cards in the current situation it is more than 10 years. For the Radeon RX, the Vega 64 is even more than 16, and for the NVidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti – about eight.
Unfortunately, there is nothing special about catching video cards on the Ethash algorithm. The only thing you can try yourself is the accumulation of inexpensive coins for the future (Dubaicoin, Musicoin, Callisto). Although hardly anyone wants to risk such large investments for the sake of dubious profit in the future.
By the way, in the table above, the profit data are shown from the results of Ethereum Classic production. Already, this asset is more profitable to mine than the parent coin. As can be seen, the reduction in complexity after the introduction of the update Constantinople did not particularly improve the lives of farm owners.
And another thing: in further calculations, we will not indicate the total cost of 6 video cards, since this indicator remains the same everywhere.
Mining algorithm NeoScrypt

Here our calculations led to the following result:
Video card | Total hashrate / power | Daily profit / month USD |
Radeon RX Vega 56 | 9600 Kx / s – 1380 W | Profit is negative |
Radeon RX Vega 64 | 12000 Kx / s – 1500 W
NVidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti | 11400 Кх / с – 1140 W | 0.22 / 6.6 |
NVidia GeForce RTX 2070 | 10200 Kx / s – 900 W | 0.45 / 13.5 |
NVidia GeForce RTX 2080 | 14100 Kx / s – 1140 W | 0.78 / 23.4 |
NVidia GeForce GTX 2080Ti | 16800 Кх / s – 1320 W | 0.96 / 28.8 |
Here, the payback period is even higher. NVidia GeForce RTX 2070 will pay off the fastest, but NVidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti will beat off the money invested for about 70 years (!).
It turned out that it is most advantageous to extract the TRAID coin in the considered algorithm. Also, a positive balance gives the extraction of assets Innova and Feathercoin. Of course, here the word can be advantageously quoted. You will not get any serious profit on these cryptocurrencies, and the equipment simply will not pay off. But there is another side to the coin: these Coins are rather young and their “path” is just beginning. Hence the conclusion that these assets may well shoot in the future. Thus, for prospective mining, the considered coins are quite suitable. If you do not want to risk, you need to try something else.
Mining on Zhash algorithm

This algorithm extracts the notorious Bitcoin Gold asset, and in general, there are several interesting Coin here. So during the calculations, we could not miss it. We got the following:
Model | Hashrate / power | Daily profit / month USD |
Radeon RX Vega 56 | 204 H / s – 1380 W | Profit is negative |
Radeon RX Vega 64 | 228 H / s – 1500 W
NVidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti | 378 H / s – 1200 W | 1.41 / 42.3 |
NVidia GeForce RTX 2070 | 330 H / s – 900 W | 1.54 / 46.2 |
NVidia GeForce RTX 2080 | 444 H / s – 1140 W | 2.20 / 66 |
NVidia GeForce GTX 2080Ti | 540 H / s – 1320 W | 2.77 / 83.1 |
The most relatively fast video card here is NVidia GeForce RTX 2080 (about 7.5 years). But NVidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti will pay off a little over 11 years.
As you can see, the Radeon boards failed completely. The rest of the video cards performed better, and the highest profit naturally showed the TOP model GTX 2080Ti. But, unfortunately, here again you do not have to rely on a stable monthly income. The profit shown in the table is derived from the extraction of the ZelCash asset. At the 2nd place is the SnowGem coin, Bitcoin Gold received the “bronze” in terms of profitability, and Bitcoin Z mining gives the least benefit.
So far, with the Zhash algorithm, as with the two previous protocols, you need to count on coin mining for the purpose of accumulation. All of the above Coins are now inexpensive, which means they have prospects for a sharp jump in the future. Moreover, there are rumors that a Bitcoin pamp should be held soon, and this will naturally lead to the growth of the remaining altcoins. Therefore, these coins are perfect for those who want to try their luck.
Mining on the X16R algorithm
At once, we say that the video cards from the Radeon and here lead the user to a minus, so we will not indicate them in the table. With other models, the situation is more attractive:

Model | Hashrate / power | Daily profit / month USD |
NVidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti | 174 Mx / s – 1140 W | 4.01 / 120.3 |
NVidia GeForce RTX 2070 | 156 Mx / s – 900 W | 3.84 / 115.2 |
NVidia GeForce RTX 2080 | 174 Mx / s – 1140 W | 4.02 / 120.6 |
NVidia GeForce GTX 2080Ti | 216 Mx / s – 1320 W | 5.18 / 155.4 |
Here the situation with payback is better. Each card pays off in about 3-5 years.
The final picture has 2 advantages at once:
- The obvious advantage is that in all cases the monthly income is more than $ 100, so this profit can be regarded as a nice bonus to the basic salary.
- Hidden plus concerns the prospects of mined coins. On this algorithm, Ravencoin (the most profitable option), Gravium, HelpTheHomeless tokens are mined. Like other little-known cryptocurrencies, these Coins are still cheap, so they can easily shoot in the future, which will allow you to recoup the equipment costs and get a plus.
On the other hand, the payback periods are alarming: they are rather large. Of course, this is not a fantastic 72 years (as is the case with the GTX 1080Ti on the NeoScrypt), but all the same, it will take a long time to deal with expenses in the current situation.
Mining on CNFast algorithm
In this case, we mine a good asset called Masari. Its production on different video cards gave the following results:

Video card model | Hashrate / power | Daily profit / month USD | Payback period |
Radeon RX Vega 56 | 21600 H / s – 1200 W | 2.78 / 83.4 | Almost 2.5 years |
Radeon RX Vega 64 | 22200 H / s – 1320 W | 2.69 / 80.7 | Just over 3.5 years |
NVidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti | 10380 H / s – 900 W | 0.7 / 21 | Almost 23 years |
NVidia GeForce RTX 2070 | 9720 H / s – 720 W | 0.86 / 25.8 | Slightly less than 15 years |
NVidia GeForce RTX 2080 | 9900 H / s – 780 W | 0.79 / 23.7 | About 21 years |
NVidia GeForce GTX 2080Ti | 13800 H / s – 960 W | 1.35 / 40.5 | Almost 18.5 years |
Here, the Radeon RX Vega 56 and Radeon RX Vega 64 will be as fast as possible – 2–4 years. But NVidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti and RTX 2080 may need more than 20 years.
As you can see, Radeon boards have already fired here: they have a relatively good profit, and these models pay off for an adequate period of time. It is better not to use NVidia cards on the considered algorithm at all and give preference to other protocols (the same X16R). Moreover, we can not exclude the possibility of the growth of coins Masari, which so far are inexpensive. In general, if you are interested in this cryptocurrency, buy Radeons and forward “into the mine.”
Should mine on video cards in 2019?

Taking into account all of the above, let’s say that today mining cryptocurrency with the help of farms is, to put it mildly, an ambiguous occupation. Of course, we managed to get several normal results (both in terms of profitability and payback), but we should not forget about other important factors that were not taken into account in the calculations:
- The complexity of mining systematically changes, because the profit can be more or less.
- Periodically, new models of video cards appear and the boards lose their relevance even before the moment you beat off the costs of them.
- Equipment damage during the mining process is not excluded, which would entail additional financial costs.
- Need to take into account the increase in tariffs for electricity. Already, electricity costs “eat up” almost half of the income, and there is no guarantee that such costs will not increase even more.
- The market of cryptocurrency at any moment may collapse, and then you will be left with nothing. Or go up and then the equipment will pay off faster.
In fact, it is worth entering into the mining on video cards in 2019 only if you are confident in the future growth of the entire market. So you can collect a lot of cheap Coin, and then sell them when the course soars. But is it worth taking such risks? Or is it better to give preference to more powerful asics? Or just stock up on coins mined on the PoS protocol? Any of the proposed options can shoot. It remains only to decide which one suits you best.
