They broke into the server room and mined the Raptoreum cryptocurrency. How much have they earned?

Unidentified hackers managed to take control of Hewlett Packard Enterprise servers by taking advantage of a Java security flaw (Log4J exploit). Then they started mining the Raptoreum cryptocurrency with a power equivalent to the entire network, which lasted from December 9 to 17 and is said to continue with at least one server.

Hackers mined the Raptoreum cryptocurrency through a Java vulnerability

During these 8 days, hackers managed to mine approximately 3.4 million virtual RTM currency worth approximately PLN 430,000. Half of the excavations were sold virtually immediately using the CoinEx exchange, leaving the remainder of the excavations on one wallet.

During the attack, many servers were compromised, each producing a significant amount of hash power on very high-end server hardware. Very few organizations in the world have this type of equipment in their hands, making it very unlikely that an attack was launched using a person’s own equipment. Thanks to a private investigation, there is now strong evidence to suggest that Hewlett-Packard 9000 EPYC server hardware was used to mine Raptoreum coins

– said the developer of Raptoreum in an interview with EinNews.

Thanks to servers equipped with AMD EPYC processors, hackers, after exploiting the Log4J vulnerability, gained access to as much as 200 MH / s of computing power. All thanks to the huge amount of cache that these CPUs have access to (this is what plays the biggest role in mining RTM). The attack caused the computing power of the entire Raptoreum network to drive not 200, but 400 MH / s for those few days.
