TSMC plans to build a chip factory at 5nm in Arizona, United States. It will create up to 1,600 jobs, it will cost twelve billion dollars and will aim to manufacture products for American companies, thereby reducing dependence on Chinese supply chains.
TSMC stated in a press release that "The project is of critical and strategic importance to enable a vibrant and competitive semiconductor ecosystem in the United States, allowing companies from that country to manufacture their products on national territory".
Construction of the plant will begin in 2021, and 5nm chip production will start in 2024. Mike Pompeo, the United States Secretary of State, confirmed that these TSMC chips will power everything; from 5G base stations to F-35 fighter jets. TSMC is also an important partner of Manzanasince it manufactures the chips Bionic who use their latest portable devices.
