TSMC says chip shortages will continue in 2022, 2nm mass production to arrive in 2025

TSMC expects to earn up to $ 15.7 billion in revenue in the current quarter. This week company executives shared details on the company’s financial performance for the fourth quarter and full calendar year 2021, along with estimates for the mass production of the company’s next-generation 2-nanometer semiconductor manufacturing process.

During the conference, TSMC CEO Dr. CC Wei clarified that the high demand for semiconductor products used in the deployment of fifth-generation cellular technologies (5G) and high-performance computing (HPC) products used for computing applications high performance will continue with little production capacity. The Internet of Things (IoT) and the automotive sector will also affect the supply capacity at TSMC.

While 5G and HPC products are generally manufactured on TSMC’s newer 5-nanometer (nm) and 7-nm chip processes, IoT and automotive chips generally use older, more mature nodes, such as the 16/28 process. nm.

The executive also answered questions related to his company’s next-generation 2nm process node. Dr. Wei responded that while TSMC does not comment on its technology roadmap, it remains confident that the 2nm technology will enter mass production in 2025. He also shared optimism about the process: highlighting that when launched, it will lead the industry in terms of transistor density and energy efficiency. Dr. Wei also stated that TSMC’s N3 family of process technology would deliver the best power, performance and efficiency (PPE) and would become an engine of the company’s revenue growth.

TSMC will prioritize companies that are not stocking chips as it plans to invest $ 100 billion to increase manufacturing capacity.
