Valve is developing new VR glasses with standalone design: “Deckard”

Valve has seen how information has been leaked about the launch of a new Virtual Reality (VR) glasses with the code name of “Deckard“. It was in the SteamVR code where he found references to this codename, and when comparing them with the latest patent applications of the company, it is basically known what are standalone VR glasses, that is, glasses that include all the necessary hardware to work on the device itself, so it does not require a computer or a smartphone to use them.

The code is very explicit, as the term “standalone“, and a string of code that suggests you might have some internal processing capacity, which would allow it to function independently. There are also references that suggest that the new glasses could have some measure of wireless connectivity such as WiFi.

Valve works closely with AMD, which was the one who developed the semi-custom AMD Ryzen SoC for their Steam Deck portable console, and while the company’s FAQ makes it clear that their console is not optimized for using VR glasses.

In an interview on the subject, Greg Coomer, Valve Product Designer / Communicator, stated that “nor we are prepared to say anything about the use of the AMD processor in a VR glasses]“, but what “fit would work well in that environment, with the necessary TDP … it is very relevant to us and our future plans“.

Now that will be the question, and it is not necessary to think about an x86 CPU, and it is that we must remember that AMD is of the RDNA graphics that will integrate the Samsung Exynos 2200 ARM SoC, and this type of product is the one that fits perfectly with Deckard to rival products like Facebook’s Oculus Quest.
