If we did not have enough with the certifications VESA DisplayHDR 400/600/1000, when panels that hit 1000 nits should be the only ones to be sold as HDR, now the marketing moves to OLED panels with the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 600, which basically indicates that the monitor panel reaches a maximum brightness of at least 600 nits / 600 cd / m2 with a minimum brightness of 0.0005 nits to offer dark blacks, that is, when you are looking at something that in theory should be black, do not see it gray.

This certification will be added to the existing VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400, which basically indicates the maximum brightness in nits while the minimum will remain 0.0005 nits. These certificates also involve covering the DCI-P3 color space by at least 90% and the ITU-R BT.709 by 99%. Asus was the first to receive this certificate on various notebooks in the Vivebook series.

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) today announced that it has added a new performance level 600 to its DisplayHDR True Black high dynamic range (HDR) specification and standard.

Based on the widely adopted Display Compliance Test Specification (DisplayHDR), the DisplayHDR True Black standard is optimized for emissive display technologies such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and future microLED displays.

The new DisplayHDR True Black 600 level offers higher luminance than the existing DisplayHDR and DisplayHDR True Black 400 and 500 levels. DisplayHDR and DisplayHDR True Black are the first fully open standards in the display industry specifying HDR quality for LCD and emissive displays, respectively.

Incredibly accurate shadow details for an extraordinary viewing experience.
Deeper black levels and dramatically increased dynamic range create an extraordinary viewing experience:

  • 600 cd / m2 maximum luminance

  • Reduces the allowed black level to 0.0005 cd / m2, the lowest level that can be effectively measured with industry standard colorimeters

  • Provides up to 50x dynamic range and 4x rise time improvement compared to DisplayHDR 1000
