One of the requirements to be able to enjoy Virtual Reality (VR) is to have a generous space free of obstaclesbut it seems that many people are not aware of the problem that this implies when you immerse yourself in the virtual world, and that is why the English insurer Aviva has revealed that during 2021, insurance claims related to VR increased by 31 percentbeing the majority of them related to suffering accidents such as crashing into a piece of furniture.

“As new gaming devices and gadgets become more popular, we often see this reflected in the claims our customers make,” said Kelly Whittington, Aviva UK Property Claims Director. “We’ve seen similar trends in the past involving handheld consoles, fitness games and even spinners.

Aviva said the average number of VR-related accidental damage claims in 2021 it was about 650 pounds (775 euros), often for broken televisions after being hit by the players themselves. As an example, throwing a controller against the screen to avoid a zombie attack, or a child breaking some design figures. These examples were covered by the company.

“These devices can be a great source of fun, but we encourage people to be aware of their surroundings and take a look at their home insurance to make sure it fits their needs,” Whittington added, urging people to add accidental damage coverage to your home insurance plan.

The insurance company indicated that due to to the rise in popularity of VR glasses over the past Christmasit is to be expected that this year the percentage of claims related to accidents linked to the virtual world will increase.
