Western Digital Announces Contamination at Two NAND Memory Factories, Lost 6.5 Exabytes of Memory

Very bad news from China: Western Digital continues to suffer problems, and now announced a contamination in the materials used to manufacture NAND memories in two of its factories, which damaged about 6.5 Exabytes of memory according to first estimates. This is explained in the company’s official statement:

Western Digital Corp. (Nasdaq: WDC) announced today that a contamination of a certain material used in its manufacturing process has occurred and is affecting production operations at both the Yokkaichi and Kitakami flash manufacturing plants. Current Western Digital impact studies indicate a reduction in flash availability by at least 6.5 exabytes. The company is working closely with its partner Kioixa to implement the necessary measures to restore the normal operational status of the facilities as soon as possible.

These production failures may affect the brand’s stock of SSDs since there are a large number of memory chips affected, although it has not yet been confirmed how big the impact will be since the complete damage studies have not been completed. nor is it known how long it will take for the factories to return to an operational state.

Let’s hope that this contamination does not have an impact on the prices of SSDs and other products that use these flash memories, since at the moment they were falling and placing themselves at attractive prices, a little more accessible. We will have to wait at least a few more days for the damage to be fully known. so stay tuned for more information about it.

What do you think about this incident that Western Digital suffered? Do you think it will affect the price of your SSDs?
