February 11, 2020 could be a very important day for fans of the smartphone world. On that day the Samsung Unpacked event will be held where both the new devices of the Galaxy S20 range and the Galaxy Z Flip folding smartphone will be unveiled (i.e. the successor of Galaxy Fold, arrived in Italy in December 2019).
The eyes of many are obviously focused on the latter, since everyone hopes that Samsung will make it a foldable able to learn from mistakes youth of its predecessor and to use properly a different form factor than what has already been seen with the Fold, going to focus on a solution more similar to Motorola RAZR.
A folding smartphone other than the Fold
Rumors about Samsung's second foldable smartphone started several months ago. In particular, the first consistent information began to arrive from China in December 2019. In fact, photos of an alleged prototype of the successor to Galaxy Fold have appeared on the Weibo social network. From the pictures, you notice a rather important difference with the first Samsung fold: this smartphone opens vertically and not horizontally, just as seen in solutions like Motorola RAZR.
In short, we are talking about a different form factor than the Fold and the South Korean company seems to want to experiment with all the possibilities offered by folding displays. As for the resistance, Samsung may have chosen to apply an additional plastic layer to solve the problems of fragility that had occurred in the past with its first foldable, which had been postponed due to "inconveniences" of this type encountered with the first units (leaving aside the issue of protective films, the Fold is delicate and should be used following Samsung's instructions, such as "do not put too much pressure on the screen").
On the back of the device you can see a dual camera and a LED flash in the upper left, but it is closed that we find the gem: in this mode of use it lights up a small "display" indicating the time (and hopefully notifications and reloading) in the area close to the cameras. The front has a display with a hole for the camera placed at the top in a central position. The edges do not seem to be very small, but we remind you that it is a prototype and that therefore the South Korean company could make improvements before the leaflet arrives on the market. For the rest, the photos show the presence, in the lower part of the device, of the speakers and the USB Type-C port. The volume rocker appears to be on the right side, while the 3.5mm headphone jack appears to be absent.
Those from Weibo are still the most detailed information on the smartphone. However, following the aforementioned leak, other interesting rumors have also emerged, such as that relating to device name. Initially everyone thought that it would simply be called Galaxy Fold 2, but as the days passed, alternatives emerged that seem to be much more valid.
Until a few weeks ago there was talk of Galaxy Bloom, which however seems to be the code name used internally by the company. Later on this rumor was dropped and the leakers came to the conclusion that the leaflet will be called Galaxy Z Flip. On the other hand, the form factor is different from the Fold and therefore the choice of a name like the one found by the leakers is very likely.
As for the technical specifications, the rumors speak of a smartphone with an internal 6.7-inch folding display with an aspect ratio of 22: 9, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, a 10MP front camera and a 3500 mAh battery with 15W charging support (or at least it seems that the charger in the package will be of this type). The operating system should be Android 10 with OneUI 2.0 customization. Put simply, Galaxy Z Flip is expected to be a top of the range in 2019 in terms of data sheet.
It also seems that the "external display" could have its own 900 mAh battery, a rather interesting aspect that would allow the smartphone to have a greater autonomy than that offered by competing devices. We remind you, in fact, that at the moment folding smartphones are still limited from the point of view of the battery due to their form factor. No information has been leaked regarding the price, but according to some sources Samsung is trying to bring Galaxy Z Flip to the market at a lower cost than that of Galaxy Fold. There are also rumors of a possible price of less than 1000 euros, but better not to get too unbalanced from this point of view, given the smartphone involved.
