2.1 GHz RX 5500 XT with air cooling thanks to MorePowerTool

The German portal Igor’s Lab – formerly Tom’s Hardware Germany – has released a new version of MorePowerTool (MPT) with support for the new Radeon RX 5500 XT.

The software, developed by a fan of the site community, allows you to push the latest AMD GPU-based video cards, then also the previous RX 5700, at very high frequencies: we talk about over 2 GHz, with the possibility of reaching 2.1 and even 2.2 GHz in some cases, all with air cooling.

However, this is not an “ordinary” tool, as it is create custom SoftPowerPlay Tables (SPPT) entered directly in the Windows registry. Delicate register, that we don't recommend everyone to touch so as not to run into possible problems with the operating system, but the most geeks with a “forklift” available may wish to try their hand at the company.

The driver of the Radeon video cards is designed to read the SoftPowerPlay Tables from the BIOS of the same the first time this is detected, then write it to the Windows registry and always have it available for quick reference.

This action creates a so-called SoftPowerPlay Table or SPPT. It is the modification of SPPT that allows you to manipulate the power limits of the cards and reach a higher GPU frequency than the limit set in the BIOS. Above you can see a screenshot of a RX 5500 XT at almost 2.1 GHz, while in general the card can be pushed to 1950 MHz with “traditional software”.

Recall that a standard RX 5500 XT reaches a boost of about 1850 MHz, so tap 2080 MHz represents a 12% jump, completely free – obviously this is not precisely the case, consumption goes up and there is a danger that the card will not hold up in the long run, but there is no immediate and quantifiable financial outlay.

For those who missed the latest news in recent days AMD has officially introduced the Radeon RX 5500 XT in 4 and 8 GB versions. This is the third video card based on 7 nanometer GPU Navi after the RX 5700 and 5700 XT, and its purpose is to allow you to play in Full HD at high details.

Its direct rival is Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER, but there are also other outsiders on the market, for example the “old” Radeon RX 580/590 that have a good quality / price ratio. The Radeon RX 5500 XT is somewhat powerful to be based on a chip of only 158 mm2 (6.4 billion): there are 1408 stream processors, 88 TMUs and 32 ROPs on board.

The card operates at a base frequency of 1607 MHz, a typical one of 1717 MHz and a boost of 1845 MHz. The RX 5500 XT reaches a maximum computing power of 5.2 TFLOPs and has a TBP of 130 watts. The 128-bit bus guarantees a bandwidth of 224 GB / s.
