Rambus fine-tunes 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory

First Micron, now Rambus. Work to develop memories GDDR6 faster and faster it is continuous, so much so that in these hours Rambus has shown that it can facilitate the entry on the market of GDDR6 at 18 Gbps, where video cards such as the flagship of Nvidia, the RTX 2080 Ti, adopt solutions up to 14 Gbps. Micron had even talked about 20 Gbps.

It is clear, as can also be guessed from the first rumors about the GeForce RTX 3000 series that emerged in recent days, that even the GDDR6 memories will play a role in ensuring greater performance, therefore we will go beyond the current limits.

In its release, Rambus writes that this memory offers 4 to 5 times higher peak performance than DDR4 and that it has combined the physical layer of the GDDR6 with a GDDR6 memory controller obtained from the recent acquisition of Northwest Logic to develop an optimized solution. able to achieve bandwidth up to 72 GB / s.

However, Rambus does not seem to be targeting the video card market, at least not directly – the company develops technologies and makes them available under license – but for the new 18 Gbps GDDR6 it looks at sectors such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, datacenters, networks and automotive systems, areas where higher bandwidth is needed. The introduction of 5G networks will encourage this challenge.

“Memory bandwidth represents a significant obstacle for designers working on high performance applications such as IA / ML. With our 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory subsystem, they can unleash the power of cutting-edge projects with a proven and affordable memory architecture, “said Hemant Dhulla, vice president and general manager of Core IP at Rambus.
