Scientists from Australia’s Flinders University have decided to change the condition of industrial pipes, which are constantly exposed to liquids that can damage their inner surface over time. The team believes that their new special polymer-based inner coating could help protect the pipes while removing toxic metals from the liquid.
Published in the journal Polymer Chemistry The conclusions and studies of scientists who collaborate with the British University of Liverpool show that their coating is “easy to make”. It uses an inexpensive mixture of elemental sulfur and a waxy chemical called dicyclopentadiene, which is a by-product of the petroleum refining process. The coating formation process requires the involvement of temperatures of around 140 degrees Celsius.

According to the publication, a polymer obtained in a simple and cheap process applied to the inside of PVC pipes, metal or concrete forms a barrier that protects the material against corrosion and other damage caused by solvents, acids or water. All this while absorbing the toxic metals that flow along with the liquid through this pipe, which is expected to be particularly useful in the oil and gas industry. Additionally, the coating can be heated to completely eliminate possible scratching of the coating.
