AMD confirms that it prepares EPYC Zen 4 with 96 cores, EPYC Zen 4c with up to 128 cores

We’ve been hearing rumors for a long time that AMD was planning to go even beyond 64 cores with its line of EPYC CPUs based on Zen 4, and now this information was officially confirmed by the company during yesterday’s event in which it was announced the new EPYC Milan-X and the new Instinct MI200 computer cards.

The EPYC “Genoa” will be based on Zen 4 and will have a maximum of 96 cores and 192 threads distributed through a total of 12 DIEs of 8 cores and 16 threads each. They will also incorporate support for DDR5 and PCI-E 5.0 in an AMD platform for the first time, significantly increasing the I / O bandwidth of the platform.

Even if these “Genoa” specs sound incredible, AMD surprised everyone with an additional announcement. The company is also preparing a line of CPUs codenamed “Bergamo”, which will be based on Zen 4c or Zen 4 Cloud. This is a modified version of Zen 4 for use in application servers in the cloud, in which some instructions of Zen 4 architecture such as AVX-512 are removed to achieve reduction of the core size and achieve greater energy efficiency, and it is optimized the cache for these types of applications. Thanks to the smaller size of the cores, AMD confirmed that it is possible to place up to 128 Zen 4c cores in an EPYC “Bergamo”, so within a year we will be seeing CPUs with twice the number of cores than the current ones, something impressive .

Both the “Genoa” EPYC and the “Bergamo” EPYC will be manufactured under TSMC’s 5nm process and will arrive at the end of 2022 with the new SP5 platform.
