On the official AMD website we read:
Our competitor recently released a limited 8086K processor to celebrate the 40th anniversary of x86 processors. We appreciate the things he has put into developing the x86 architecture over the last 4 decades. However, we are ready to take over this initiative now. That’s why we’re giving forty performance-hungry enthusiasts in the United States a chance to celebrate another forty years of computing performance by trading their commemorative chip for our CPU that lets you work, play, and create with bang.
So the company decided to sort of troll Intel and hit him with a typical marketing blow. Intel Core i7-8086K replacement (which, by the way, is not so special at all) for a 16-core and 32-thread beast is a really good opportunity, where we get a twice as expensive and certainly a much more efficient processor. No wonder that the action only provides forty such exchanges.
Not only is this a fun opportunity, it’s also a pretty funny situation where AMD claims to be taking the lead in the processor market. No wonder … considering the recent interview in which Intel’s CEO stated that AMD will soon take over a large part of the server market. If you are interested and currently live in the USA, more details about the exchange can be found here.
