In practice, the suction cup takes the form of magnetically snapped cylinders with filtering discs between them, which are designed so that the smallest pieces fall to the very bottom, and the larger ones are arranged in layers of different sizes.

So it is a useful gadget not so much for vacuuming a floor full of bricks (it is even indicated by the lack of a suitable suction cup), but for sorting them in a specific tank, which is definitely not perfect and you can see it at the end of the movie.
