Apple presents its M1 Pro and M1 Max, compares the GPU of the M1 Max with an RTX 3080 Mobile

Yesterday afternoon Apple unveiled its new M1 Pro and M1 Max SOCs, which will power the company’s new line of Macbook Pro. Like the original M1, they stand out for their great power efficiency and performance, with the M1 Max outperforming current Intel alternatives in terms of CPUs, and practically matching the RTX 3080 Mobile in terms of GPUs, all with a power consumption. significantly lower.

Both the M1 Pro and M1 Max use a 10-core ARM CPU, which has 8 high-performance cores plus two high-efficiency cores, having the same performance in terms of CPU, which outperforms the original M1 by 70%. The difference is in the GPU and the memory system, since while the M1 Pro has a 16-core GPU, supports up to 32GB of unified memory, and has a bandwidth of 200GB / s, the M1 Max has a GPU. with 32 cores, it supports up to 64GB of unified memory, and has a bandwidth of 400GB / s, having practically a GPU with practically twice the speed.

The integrated GPU of the M1 Max is on par with the RTX 3080 Mobile, consuming 100W less

According to Apple at the bottom of its comparison, an MSI GE76 Raider 11UH-053 was used for comparisons with the integrated Apple M1, which uses an RTX 3080 Mobile with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, 1800MHz boost and 165W TGP. This is one of the RTX 3080 Mobile with the highest TGP and boost frequency so the performance will be practically the maximum that can be achieved in a laptop, and even so Apple ensures that you get practically the same performance.

The most striking thing is the consumption, since while the RTX 3080 Mobile reaches 165W, the Apple GPU is below 60W, having a difference in consumption of more than 100W. This will allow for a much longer battery life, which is something that is obviously appreciated.

Something to note is that Apple did not mention which tests it used to obtain these results, so its performance is not guaranteed to come close in all types of tasks. We must also remember that since it is designed for MacOS, it cannot be used for too many games, and even if we install Windows on the Mac, there will be no drivers for this GPU, so it is not a good alternative if you plan to buy a laptop to play. .

CPU performance far outstrips Intel Core i7-11800H with half the power consumption

In terms of the CPU, both the M1 Pro and the M1 Max use the same 10-core ARM configuration, significantly outperforming the Intel Core i7-11800H with half the consumption, something that is again appreciated as it is a laptop where the battery life is a key point.

While all this sounds very promising, it should be noted that the 2021 Macbook Pro equipped with the M1 Max start at US $ 3,499, so it will not be cheap to access these new Macbooks. Still, if used for work, they can be a great investment because of their great power and energy efficiency, making them possibly a hit in the US and Europe.

What do you think about the power of the new Apple M1 Max? Do you think your GPU really matches an RTX 3080 Mobile?
