Firefox can soon paint all sites in dark or light mode, if you want

Mozilla is working on a new feature in the organization’s Firefox web browser that can be used to force a specific color scheme on the sites you visit.

Most browsers already support light and dark modes, but the functionality is limited to painting the browser’s Chrome using the color scheme. The content of the website is not modified when the function is enabled or configured.

The latest version of Firefox Nightly, version 96.0a1, comes with a new feature that extends the functionality. Once activated, the sites will also display in the selected color scheme.

This is what the feature looks like in Materia Geek. Dark mode was enabled on Windows 10 system and Firefox took it to display browser UI and web page content using color scheme.

All sites are displayed using the selected mode and color scheme. Firefox includes options to change some parameters, including text and background colors.

This is how the function is configured in Firefox Nightly:

  1. Select Menu> Settings.
  2. Scroll down to the Language & Appearance section.
  3. Activate the “Colors” button on the page.

Here you have the following options:

  • To configure the force color feature on websites, set “Override page specified colors with your previous selections” to Always.
  • Change the text and background colors to your liking.
  • Also change the colors of the visited and unvisited links.
  • Select OK to save the new settings.

The websites will be painted using the selected operating system mode, light or dark, and the colors selected in the Firefox preferences.

The feature was announced by Mozilla Morgan employee on Twitter. Based on the information posted there, users should expect that some content will not look perfect when the forced color mode is enabled. Users are encouraged to report bugs and problems in Bugzilla.

The functionality to override the text, background, and colors of links on sites has been a part of Firefox for a long time. The new feature takes this one step further by adding the operating system color mode to the site as well; this paints all elements of the site using the selected color mode.

Firefox users had to use browser extensions like Midnight Lizard before to achieve something similar. Mozilla’s implementation is basic at the time: there is no override option or option to customize the color scheme for a specific site using native options. Since it was released on Nightly only at that time, the missing functionality may be added to improve the usability of the feature.

Now you: light or dark mode, what is your preference?
