Fitbit Ionic poses a health risk to users. The manufacturer withdraws it from the market

The Fitbit Ionic smartwatch hit the market in 2017 Ionic, and its production ended two years ago. Now, however, we hear about it again and it is not because of the refreshment, but because of a defect that forced the manufacturer to withdraw the device from the market.

Fitbit Ionic has sold 1,693,000 units worldwide

So what happened that five years after its premiere and two years after the end of production, the device is suddenly withdrawn? This is due to reports of overheating of the battery. According to the information provided by the company, so far there have been at least 174 reports of the incident, and in 118 cases the user of the smartwatch suffered burns, including four second-degree and two – a third. While this problem has occurred to only a fraction of Iconic owners, Fitbit has no intention of underestimating the problem as it apparently realizes the problem may occur at a later date.

Removing nearly 1.7 million copies from the market is quite a difficult task, but it seems to be the only way to fix the problem. In the first place, the company, along with the American Product Safety Commission, recommends discontinuing the use of the smartwatch and contacting the manufacturer. What about to do with the device itself? They are refundable, and Fitbit offers $ 299 (or local currency equivalent) refund in return, as well as a 40% discount on other smartwatch models.
