GeForce RTX 3060, mining limiter bypassed, this time for real

GeForce RTX 3060, mining limiter bypassed, this time for real

Now yes, it seems (we emphasize, it SEEMS) that the limiter posted by Nvidia on the GeForce RTX 3060 it was somehow bypassed. By return of post from the fake reports of last week, the Japanese site PC Watch has collected confirmations on the existence of a stratagem that allows the Nvidia GPU to express itself to the maximum even with Dagger Hashimoto or similar Ethash algorithms such as Ethereum, the very ones targeted by the limiter.

PC Watch writes that no changes to the card BIOS and driver are required, so we can’t talk about a hack or a mod, at least for the moment. However, it is not clear what is the “magic ingredient” that allows the RTX 3060 to reach maximum performance and keep it constant: a change in mining software? Maybe, but we await more information. The only thing PC Watch says is that the intervention it’s easy and requires little effort.

At the time of writing, it is rumored that the bypassing of the block can be connected, ironically, to Nvidia drivers reachable at this address. The drivers in question, called 470.05, are designed to enable CUDA support on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL 2) and would not have any kind of limiter.

To confirm the PC Watch report, several screenshots have appeared online – this time difficult to refute – showing how the RTX 3060 grappling with the mining of Ethereum through the Dagger Hashimoto T-REX algorithm almost reaches 50 MH / s. The screenshot shows the mining program that has been running for over 8 minutes, confirming that the limit has been exceeded (the limiter comes into operation only after a few minutes of mining), but screens with a much higher playing time circulate.

Pending more information, the loss of the limiter pays off the RTX 3060 more attractive to miners and this is certainly not good news for gamers either (will cause even stronger GPU shortage) nor for Nvidia. The company has in fact launched a line of cards dedicated to miners – called CMP – which would be less interesting if the GeForce RTX 3060 and the upcoming high-end proposals will allow the most profitable cryptocurrencies to be “undermined” at maximum power. Of course, Nvidia always makes money, whether it sells to gamers or miners, but after having exposed itself so much, circumventing the limiter does not represent good publicity (especially if the news of the driver distributed without any limiter is confirmed).
