Jon Peddie Research (JPR) ha published data on the sector of GPUs (dedicated and integrated) for the second quarter of 2021. The market hit a share of 123 million units delivered in three months analyzed with market shares regarding AMD, Intel and NVIDIA substantially stable, with AMD losing 0.17%, compared to an Intel that grew by 0.11% and an NVIDIA that scored a +0 .06%.

Overall the number of GPUs delivered in terms of units grew by 3.4% compared to last quarter and by 37% compared to the same period in 2020, with NVIDIA which in the comparison with the previous quarter made “the lion’s share” with a +3,8%, followed by Intel with + 3.6% and AMD with + 2.3%.

By restricting the analysis to the sector of dedicated video cards, where only AMD and NVIDIA operate currently awaiting Intel and its Arc solutions scheduled for Q1 2022, JPR reports that there has been a 2.9% drop in deliveries compared to the previous quarter.

Going to see instead the share of AMD and NVIDIA taking into account not only desktop video cards but also dedicated notebook GPUs, we see that NVIDIA has an 83% share compared to AMD’s 17%: NVIDIA earned 3 percentage points in one year.

Q2 2020 Q1 2021 Q2 2021
AMD 20% 19% 17%
NVIDIA 80% 81% 83%

“In an unprecedented year, companies reported shortages of components, capacitors, substrates and more. Even companies with a diversified portfolio were forced to allocate to the various segments they served. The upcoming stock buildup for the holiday season which usually takes place in the third quarter will be limited until the supply chain catches up with demand, “analysts point out.

In a nutshell, shortage will continue to impact the availability and pricing of GPUs and the devices that contain them.
