Graphics cards jumped 20% in the last month, could go even higher

Yesterday 3D Center showed a report where they analyze the prices of GPUs in Austria and Germany, and in which we can see that GPUs have seen an increase in price, while availability is dropping. Currently NVIDIA GPUs are 70% above MSRP compared to 59% in August. For its part, AMD GPUs are 73% more expensive than 64% last month.

We have seen how in the past, the situation with COVID-19 and the cryptocurrency boom affected the demand and prices of GPUs. Little by little we saw the prices skyrocket and each time they were moving further away from the suggested price.

3D Center provides us with a graph to better see these changes.

As we can see, there has been a general increase since January. In May we had a peak of more than 300% Above NVIDIA MSRP. This correlates with a significant lack of GPU, but after that tragic episode things seemed to be looking for the better. Prices began to fall and availability increased, and although it was not an ideal situation, there was still hope.

Unfortunately the bad news began, with some rumors pointing to an increase in September, along with the news of TSMC increasing the price of its 7nm process.

As it turns out, those rumors and expectations are coming true. While it is true that this report only reflects Austria and Germany, it is very likely that those numbers will be translated to the rest of the world. The rise in TSCM is not a good indicator, so unfortunately we will have to wait for increases in hardware.

Hopefully the situation can be controlled, we already saw how NVIDIA tries to fight against the lack of stock using defective chips that can be used for other GPUs. For now, you have to be attentive to any changes in the manufacturers and see what happens with prices in the rest of the world.

Do you think we will have a big increase in GPUs like in May?
