Here is the Orca. The world’s largest air purification system that sucks and stores CO2

Startup Climeworks has just announced the start of Orca’s operation at the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant facility. It is the largest air purification system in the world that works as simply as you can imagine – it draws in the surrounding air and sucks it out of CO2, or carbon dioxide.

Orca is simply a great air purification system that sucks CO2 out of the air

Orca, as a DAC (Direct Air Capture) system, is based on a modular design, thanks to which all equipment is supposedly greener and can be easily upgraded. Its zero emissions are also ensured by the vicinity of a power plant, which supplies the system with completely “green energy”. This Orca is used, among others, by to drive its numerous turbines, which draws air into its subsystems and sucks CO2 out of it using filters, which is then permanently stored underground as part of the mineralization process. The carbon dioxide so obtained can then be used in carbonated drinks or in greenhouses to help grow vegetables.

Orca, as a milestone in the direct air capture industry, has provided a scalable, flexible and repeatable plan for Climeworks’ future expansion. Thanks to this success, we are prepared to rapidly develop our effectiveness in the coming years. Achieving global zero net emissions is a long way to go, but with Orca, we believe Climeworks has taken one significant step closer to achieving this goal.

Said Climeworks co-founder Jan Wurzbacher.

Now Orca is said to be extracting 4,000 tons of CO2 from the air every year, which sounds proud, but is now a drop in the ocean if we compare it with the fact that humans generate more than 30 gigatons of CO2 at the same time. However, the technology is just developing and the company has no intention of stopping to finally capture millions of tons of CO2 by the second half of this decade.
