How robots help in the production of the hanging gardens of Semiramis?

The fruit of the work of specialists from Müller Illien Landscape Architects and the Swiss company Timbatec takes the form of Semiramis. Experts in Babylonian history will probably associate this name with the name of the queen who probably commissioned the construction of the ancient Hanging Gardens. Of course, it is not a coincidence, because “modern Semiramis” is also something like hanging gardens where robots help.

Some design and others do. You already know the first for Semiramis, and the second is the Robotic Fabrication Laboratory at ETH Zurich. They are responsible for creating the planned structure, which is to be finally completed by spring 2022 and will be built in a technology park in the Swiss city of Zug. However, from what you can see, it is better to say that robots are responsible for all, or at least most of the work with wooden panels.

According to the plans, Semiramis will be 22.5 meters high and contain five plant-filled wooden shells that will be supported by eight steel pillars. Before that happens, however, the four robotic arms will do a lot of work in the labs to arrange the plywood panels in the desired configuration, which are then joined by human workers.

While this doesn’t sound like a robotic job, each of the planned pods consists of 51 to 88 such panels. This is a lot, and any differences in their arrangement may end up in a crooked flower bed, so the arms, led by a special control algorithm, ensure that everything will be perfectly connected.
