How to restore the classic view of Gmail.com
Last month, Google announced the release of a new Gmail design for customers. The option to try out the new Gmail design is shown to users on startup, but is completely optional at this time.
The new design brings Google Gmail, Chat, Spaces and Meet services closer together. The new left sidebar displays entry points so users can switch to one of the services with just one click. Each icon supports notification bubbles that immediately highlight new content. The new design allows you to hide the main Gmail sidebar, among other things.
The classic Gmail layout lists mail, chat, rooms, and meeting folders and links on the left, and links to Google services in a sidebar on the right.
Starting in April 2022, the new Gmail view will be enabled for all users, but it’s possible to restore the classic view at that time. This guide walks you through the steps to restore the classic view of Gmail. At this point, it should be noted that Google plans to remove the classic layout from Gmail by the end of Q2 2022. Once that happens, users will no longer be able to restore the classic view.
Some Gmail users may prefer the classic Gmail layout to the new layout that Google will release in 2022. The new layout is optional at this stage, but many Gmail web interface users should see an option to try it out. The layout will be enabled by default in the next month.
To restore the classic Gmail interface, do the following:
- Open the main Gmail website, if you’re not already there.
- Activate the gear icon in the upper right corner. It’s to the left of the question mark icon there.
- Select the “Go back to original Gmail view” link that is displayed when the menu opens.
- A form opens on the page. Select Reload to return to the original view. You can write a reason for returning, but it’s completely optional.
- The Gmail website is reloaded and the classic view is restored at the end of the process.
Keep in mind that Gmail’s 2022 layout will automatically turn on in the future, and there’s no option to go back once Google removes the option from the menu.
