Intel has decided to “bring into service” a Pentium processor from six years ago, based on Haswell architecture at 22 nanometers. The Pentium G3420, which was discontinued in 2015, is now available again.
According to a PCN (Product Change Notification) document, Intel has decided to resume production of the old processor “based on a new decision on the roadmap and reactivating production again in the long term”.
This decision is probably due to the shortage of 14 nanometer processors that Intel has not yet resolved. Recall that it is rumored that Intel has turned to Samsung to increase the production of processors and leave the “shortage” behind.
The Pentium G3420 is a dual core chip, free of Hyper-Threading and based on the 22 nanometer production process. The processor has a TDP of 53W, a base clock of 3.2 GHz and is compatible with LGA 1150 motherboards.
We doubt that there is any private individual willing to buy the Pentium G3420, so the chip will presumably benefit OEMs only.
Intel customers have until May 26, 2020 to place the last orders for the Pentium G3420: shipments will stop on December 3, 2020.
