Intel Confirms Iris Xe Graphics Card Does Not Support AMD Processors

Intel yesterday announced its first graphics card to be offered to OEM partners. This marks the first time Intel graphics cards will be available to consumers in nearly 22 years since the release of the Intel 740.

As Legit Reviews reported yesterday, Intel Iris Xe discrete desktop graphics cards require a dedicated UEFI BIOS to work. The announcement of Intel’s first dGPU for system integrators and OEMs has sparked excitement among GPU enthusiasts, finally, after so many years, we see a third player entering the battle for consumers.

The Intel Iris Xe graphics card is equipped with the DG1 GPU based on the Xe-LP architecture. It is an entry-level device with 80 execution units (640 shader processors), well suited for a wide range of tasks. However, Iris Xe graphics cards are not meant for gamers. These cards are designed for low-power, low-cost multimedia devices, home entertainment systems, or businesses.

Only with the Intel Xe-HPG-based DG2 GPU can we all finally see the real competition in the gaming market, which is now needed more than ever as both NVIDIA and AMD face supply challenges. However, Intel has already confirmed that the DG2 will be manufactured in a third-party foundry, which could also be affected by wafer availability restrictions.

For the Iris Xe, Intel has confirmed that the card will only work with certain in-house processors, namely Coffee Lake-S and Comet Lake-S chips. A dedicated motherboard chipset is also required. More importantly, the Iris Xe graphics card will not work on AMD-based systems.

“Iris Xe discrete graphics will be paired with 9th Gen (Coffee Lake-S) and 10th Gen (Comet Lake-S) Intel Core processors and Intel B460, H410, B365 and H310C desktop chipsets. These motherboards require a special BIOS that supports Intel Iris Xe, so the cards will not be compatible with other systems, “an Intel spokesman said
