Intel shows two PCI-E 5.0 SSDs running alongside an i9-12900K, they reach 28.3GB / s read

Ryan Shrout, Intel’s chief performance strategist, had planned to demonstrate PCIe 5.0 SSDs at CES 2022. Unfortunately, the company canceled its presence at the event and will only present new technologies during its virtual conference call.

One of the demonstrations that was planned was the first display of a PCIe 5.0 SSD in a system equipped with an Intel Core i9-12900K. The good news is that Shrout decided to demo, and show the potential on his Twitter account. Ryan obtained samples of some SSDs from Samsung, the PM1743 PCIe 5.0, which will be for the moment for companies and will be available with capacities ranging from 1.92 TB to 15.36 TB.

The demo is actually a comparison between the sequential read speed of a high-end WD Black PCIe 4.0 exceeding 7GB / s and the drive Samsung PCIe 5.0 that reaches up to 13.7 GB / s. The write speed is reported to be 6.6GB / s.

To make things even more interesting, Ryan Shrout installed two Samsung PCIe 5 SSDs in a single system to achieve around 28GB / s. However, due to a limited number of PCIe 5.0 lanes in the Intel Alder Lake system, the discrete GPU had to be removed.

While PCIe Gen5 SSDs are not expected to gain popularity quickly, it is a great opportunity to see where next-generation storage will lead to personal and business computing in the relatively near future, perhaps 2023.
