LEGO x Epic Games

LEGO y Epic Games announced a long-term collaboration to shape to a future metaverse where the priority will be safety, since it will be the space for children and families. As indicated, this metaverse will adapt to different age ranges, which can range from playing to creating content through the use of creative tools (LEGO bricks). With children increasingly attached to mobile devices and Internet games, at least it is a way to let them enjoy this experience in a safe and secure environment.

The LEGO Group and Epic Games today announced that they are entering into a long-term partnership to shape the future of the metaverse and make it safe and fun for kids and families. The two companies will team up to create an immersive, creative and engaging digital experience for children of all ages to enjoy together.

The digital experience for the whole family will give children access to tools that will enable them to become confident creators and offer amazing play opportunities in a safe and positive space.

“Children enjoy playing in the digital and physical worlds and moving seamlessly between the two. We believe there is enormous potential for them to develop lifelong skills such as creativity, collaboration and communication through digital experiences. But we have a responsibility to make them safe, inspiring, and beneficial to all. Just as we’ve protected children’s right to safe physical play for generations, we’re committed to doing the same for digital play. We look forward to working with Epic Games to bring shape this exciting and playful future,” Niels B Christiansen, CEO of The LEGO Group, said:

“The LEGO Group has captivated the imagination of children and adults through creative play for nearly a century, and we’re thrilled to come together to build a space in the metaverse that’s fun, entertaining and made for kids and families,” said Tim Sweeney. CEO and founder of Epic Games.

As the metaverse evolves, it is reshaping the way people meet, play, work, learn and interact in a 3D virtual world. The LEGO Group and Epic Games will combine their extensive experience to ensure that this next iteration of the Internet is designed from the ground up with the well-being of children in mind.

Epic Games has experience making creative tools and immersive worlds open and accessible to gamers and developers around the world. It is at the forefront of popular culture, creating experiences that connect people through games, music and creative collaboration. Epic is also committed to enabling developers to create age-appropriate online experiences and in 2020 acquired SuperAwesome, a technology pioneer designed to deliver safe digital engagement with those under 16.

For 90 years, the LEGO Group has inspired generations of children through play using the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO brick, which remains at the core of its business. The company is a leader in defining safe digital gaming experiences for children, including developing an industry-standard Children’s Digital Safety Policy with UNICEF and launching in 2016 the first fully moderated live social application for children .

The LEGO Group and Epic Games have agreed on three principles that will ensure that the digital spaces they develop offer engaging play opportunities safely:

  • Protect children’s right to play by making safety and well-being a priority.
  • Safeguard the privacy of children by putting their best interests first.
  • Give children and adults tools that allow them to control their digital experience.
