According to the aforementioned source, McDonald’s will sell its McD Tech Labs to IBM in December in order to “further accelerate” the development of automated voice ordering systems. The new agreement will help apply the technology to more countries, languages ​​and menus, and will allow McD Tech Labs to join IBM Cloud & Cognitive Software.

It’s worth recalling that McDonald’s began testing its AI-powered Drive-Thru for taking orders at 10 Chicago restaurants in late spring this year. The system was not perfect, as it is difficult to define the accuracy of around 85%, forcing workers to intervene on around 1 in 5 orders, but the technology was said to have brought “significant benefits” to both customers and employees. However, it still requires a lot of corrections.
