Many people use Netflix contrary to its terms and conditions. Why? Because while the platform allows you to share an account, it is only within one household, and probably each of us knows perfectly well that users do not always comply with it. And while Netflix has not done anything about it so far, it may change now.
Let’s face it, the option of sharing an account on Netflix means that many more people use the platform. It is allowed within one household, but between people living in different places it is a breach of the regulations. Until now, Netflix has done little to curb these illegal practices. A verification has been introduced that requires the account owner to confirm their identity from time to time, but this does not change much. Now, however, that may change as Netflix faces much more competition forcing it to make more investments in the content it produces. And for that you need finances.
Netflix Will Introduce Account Sharing Fees?
In Chile, Peru and Costa Rica, two new features have started to be tested to limit the sharing of accounts with people outside the household.
We’ve always made it easy for people living together to share their Netflix account with features such as separate profiles on our Standard and Premium plans. While they were extremely popular, they also caused some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared
– we read in the official blog entry.
Once again, Netflix made it clear that sharing your password with people outside of your household is against the rules and significantly reduces your company’s revenues, thus reducing your ability to invest in new content.
Therefore, in these three countries what can be described as an “additional account” has been introduced. This feature allows you to add up to two non-household members to your account. Of course, for an additional fee, which depends on the country: in Chile around $ 2.94, in Costa Rica – $ 2.99, and in Peru – $ 2.12. Such additional user would have their own password and login. In addition, Netflix will even allow you to transfer your existing profile along with your viewing history or personalized recommendations, so if we want to start using the platform honestly, we will not lose this data.
It is not known how long the testing will take in these three countries, but it is expected that if they are successful, Netflix is carrying out this feature in other markets in the future. For now, the platform wants to see if this approach will increase revenues and the number of subscribers.
