Novak presented the Global Energy Prize at REW

MOSCOW, 13 Oct – PRIME. Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Alexander Novak presented the award to the Global Energy Association, the ceremony was held as part of the Russian Energy Week (REW), the event was also attended by the chairman of the board of Rosseti Andrey Ryumin, according to a press release from the association.

Novak said that Russia has become a leader in small nuclear power

“Alexander Novak presented the Global Energy Prize to Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Viktor Orlov (Russia) for fundamental research on the development of innovative energy technologies based on fast reactors with a heavy alloy coolant and a closed fuel cycle. The ceremony took place at the international forum “Russian Energy Week “. The event was also attended by the Chairman of the Board of PJSC Rosseti Andrey Ryumin,” the message says.

It is noted that two winners from the United States, University of Houston Distinguished Engineering Professor Kaushik Rajasekara and Argonne National Laboratory Senior Research Fellow Mercury Kanadzidis, were unable to attend the ceremony in person, but addressed the participants and guests of the ceremony via video link.

During the ceremony, the report says, Novak also presented an honorary diploma of the association on behalf of Global Energy to a foreign scientist “for his contribution to the development of energy in the countries of the African region.” It was received by the dean of the engineering faculty of the University. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu in Nigeria Luke Chika Eme. This is the first time such a diploma has been awarded.

Earlier, the association established such an award for Russian scientists: for their contribution to the development of the energy industry. “The decision to encourage foreign specialists with an Honorary Diploma is due to the fact that the geography of applications for the Global Energy Prize has expanded significantly over the past three years. Nomination submissions from the developing world drew the attention of the international scientific community to the work of scientists from Africa and Latin America,” — noted in the release.

The award winners were determined in July at a ceremony in Khanty-Mansiysk. This year, the geography of collecting applications for participation in the shortlist of the award has expanded significantly: in total, 119 scientists from 43 countries of the world were nominated. This exceeded the figures for 2021 (36 countries) and 2020 (20 countries) and became an absolute record in the history of the award. The shortlist, announced by the organizers in May, included fifteen scientists from nine countries: India, Kazakhstan, Canada, China, Russia, Singapore, the United States, Uruguay and France.

The Global Energy Association is a non-profit organization headquartered in Moscow. Its members are Gazprom, Surgutneftegaz and Rosseti FGC UES. Since 2003, 45 scientists from 15 countries have already become laureates of the award: Australia, Austria, Great Britain, Greece, Denmark, Italy, Iceland, Canada, Russia, USA, Ukraine , France, Switzerland, Sweden and Japan. The premium fund is 39 million rubles.

Russian Energy Week takes place in Moscow from 12 to 14 October. RIA Novosti acts as an information partner of the forum.
