As it is known, NVIDIA announced its intention to acquire arm from Japan’s Softbank in a transaction since equivalent of US $ 40 billion in cash and shares. The operation is at the present time being examined by the various national bodies in charge of giving the green light to operations of this type but in the light of the current timing it seems that everything could suffer further delays.
The Telegraph in fact highlights how the european commission has not yet expressed itself on this matter about the feasibility of this operation, as it has not yet received all the documents required and necessary to be able to start its operations. Everything is postponed to the beginning of September, when the commission will resume its work at the end of the summer break and obviously on condition that in the meantime it has received what has been requested.
At the time of the announcement of the transaction, NVIDIA indicated that it plans to complete the acquisition in a period of 18 months, therefore by March 2022, with the optional possibility of extending this period until September 2022, thus arriving 2 years after the initial announcement.
It is difficult to imagine that a possible OK from the European Commission could arrive before March 2022, should the verification work begin in September: these procedures are generally very complex and require particular time, especially considering the possible implications in terms of market competition of a deal of this type.
There is not only the response from the European Commission to wait to complete the arm switch to NVIDIA; similar actions are in fact expected by the bodies responsible for the United States, Japan, China and the United Kingdom. If arm will enter NVIDIA we will only know in a future that at least for now does not seem to be so close.
