Nvidia boosts GTX 1060 performance with 6GB GDDR5X RAM

Fourth option GTX 1060 launched on the market!

Nvidia has released a new version of the GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card that runs with 6GB of RAM, but unlike the previous version of this GPU, it relies on faster GDDR5X memory instead of just GDDR5.

The new graphics card showed up on Nvidia’s website without fanfare or warnings over the weekend and should at least be faster than the GDDR5 model, as pointed out by Hot Hardware, which noted the update on its list of new GPUs on its official product page.

In other words, the GTX 1060 6GB model is now listed as “6GB GDDR5 / X” with 8Gbps memory speed, regardless of the version in question.

That doesn’t mean the new GDDR5X memory won’t run faster, although Nvidia does not list a later model with 6GB GDDR5 memory at 9Gbps on the product page.

What is the result? The latest update with GDDR5X memory should be faster, there are now four variants of the GTX 1060: 3GB GDDR5 model, 6GB GDDR5 memory, 6GB GDDR5 memory with overclocked memory up to 9Gbps, and a new graphics card with GDDR5X video memory, which should be able to outperform its predecessor and achieve 10Gbps memory speed.

The new memory should provide a nice 10% boost in overall memory bandwidth over the overclocked GTX 1060 GDDR5 model, and possibly even more if Nvidia overclocks the memory above 10Gbps (depending on what type of GDDR5X memory is used on new maps).

POWER PASCAL

The GTX 1060 is still a popular graphics card, despite the fact that the Pascal architecture has been replaced by the fast Turing GPUs. The new model should help Nvidia stay competitive against AMD graphics cards.

In particular, AMD currently appears to be preparing the Radeon RX 590, which early tests showed is set to outperform the GTX 1060 (and offers 205 MHz higher clock speed than the current Radeon RX 580). The RX 590 will presumably come with 8GB of video memory, albeit with GDDR5 memory.

We’re hoping the refreshed GTX 1060 won’t see a price increase or stay within reasonable limits, but let’s start with how many retailers will buy GDDR5X graphics cards.
