Nvidia CMP, $ 30 million for ‘crypto GPUs’ from a company that mines Bitcoin

Hut 8 Mining Corporation, known simply as Hut 8, announced in recent days the purchase of Nvidia CMP (Crypto Mining Processor) cards for a value of 30 million dollars. Nvidia will deliver them starting in May, for an installation on the Hut 8 farms planned for the summer.

In a press release, the company claims that Nvidia CMP cards will guarantee a drastic increase in aggregate computing power, thanks to a contribution of approximately 1600 GH / s (Gigahash per second). Nvidia cards will be used for mine cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin, and it is not difficult to think of Ethereum, even if Hut 8 does not go into detail.

“The adoption and development of applications that interact with various blockchain networks have never been stronger, opening up many possibilities in different industries,” said Jaime Leverton, CEO of Hut 8. “We are thrilled to have these high performance CMP cards in our fleet. We believe mining via CMP will open up new opportunities for Hut 8 and allow us to continue pursuing our long and short term plans to have increased and diversified revenue streams“.

It is unclear which CMP card models Hut 8 purchased from the 30HX, 40HX, 50HX and 90HX solutions announced by Nvidia and which we found to be based on a mix of Turing (30HX, 40HX, 50HX) and Ampere (90HX) GPUs.

30HX 40HX 50HX 90HX
Ethereum Hash Rate 26 MH / s 36 MH / s 45 MH / s 86 MH / s
TDP 125 W 185 W 250 W 320 W
Power connectors 1x 8-pin 1x 8-pin 2x 8-pin 2x 8-pin
Memory 6GB 8GB 10GB 10GB

Nvidia CMP accelerators are without video outputs to promote better cooling and enable the creation of mining systems with a greater number of GPUs. Furthermore, lower peak voltages and frequencies are shown for the core, improving the efficiency of mining, which is very related to memory and obviously consumption. There have been rumors of the possible arrival of a fifth model based on GA100 GPU, but for the moment there are no confirmations or denials.

Taking the RTX 3090 as a reference, capable of mining at about 120 MH / s, it would take about 13,333 cards to reach the 1600 GH / s indicated or 18,660 units of the top of the range CMP 90HX which stops at 86 MH / s: this is a rather substantial order that we hope will not have repercussions on the already almost zero market for gaming video cards.
