Nvidia Strike Back: RTX 2080 Super Laptops

Expect unexpectedly cool gaming laptops in 2020.

If the RTX 2080 Super Max-Q were a reality, laptops like the Razer Blade could be more powerful.

At CES 2020, AMD took the stage by showcasing a range of GPUs, including the Radeon RX 5700M, for laptops, imposing competition on this market for the first time in years. However, Nvidia is not going to turn its cheek.

We want to tell you about the leak of Geekbench test results found by the well-known data provider – Tum Apisak, which suggests that we will receive a Max-Q version of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super in the near future, however, some details are in doubt.

The specs reported in the Geekbench leak seem odd, which we’ll discuss later, but it could be due to early drivers as well as erroneous information on the system. This isn’t the first time we’ve received rumors that Nvidia is actively working on mobile versions of the GeForce RTX Super, so the leak promises us a glimpse of what the new series graphics cards will be able to do.

In the end, we won’t be able to tell how accurate the leaks are until Nvidia deigns to announce the Super Mobility series – if it ever does. Until then, all we can do is examine the available leaks and try to draw conclusions.

| LOOK DEEPER

Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q lit up in a laptop with an Intel Core i9-10980HK processor. But, the 10980HK in this Geekbench result runs at a maximum frequency of 4.92 GHz, instead of the 5 GHz announced at CES 2020. We have previously seen a leak from the same source suggesting that the maximum frequency of the new processor is capped at 4.8 GHz, but the data of this leak show the lowest result that we have seen, which raises doubts about the reliability of the data.

On the other hand, the graphics card specifications seem plausible. With 48-thread processors, it matches the desktop-grade RTX 2080 Super. On the other hand, we see a drop in clock speeds, which is to be expected: down to 1.23 GHz from the 1.815 GHz desktop graphics card model.

This is to be expected due to the heat dissipation limitations of thin and light gaming laptops running on Max-Q graphics, video cards simply cannot operate at the same clock speed, which leads to a decrease in overall performance.

If this mobile graphics card actually exists, it should offer a performance boost over the vanilla RTX 2080, although if the boost reflects the difference between an RTX 2080 upgrade to an RTX 2080 Super on a desktop platform, the upgrade will be negligible.

Until Nvidia describes what the RTX 2080 Super Max-Q is capable of (if the graphics chip does exist), we can only wait and dig into the leaks available. As it stands, since the available information relies on hardware announced without any specific specifications, it is difficult to trust early leaks.

Anyway, since the RTX 2080 Super was a minor upgrade from the original graphics card released back in July 2019, if you’re looking for a high-end gaming laptop, both 2080 options will do. If the news doesn’t lie, the RTX 2080 Super is going to be faster, but most likely , the graphics card will not be significantly faster to meet expectations.
