Nvidia (with AMD) has released the world’s most powerful AI system

The Nvidia DGX A100 system has five petaflops of performance with EPYC sauce.

Nvidia has unveiled the third generation of the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence system with the launch of the new Nvidia DXG A100.

The DGX A100 offers five petaflops of AI performance as it combines the power and capabilities of an entire data center into a single platform for the first time. The system is already available for purchase, the first order has already gone to the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory, which will use its AI and computing power to better understand and combat COVID-19.

In a press release, Nvidia’s Founder and CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, explained how the DGX A100 will advance AI, saying:

“The Nvidia DGX A100 is the perfect AI tool. Nvidia DGX is the first artificial intelligence engine built for end-to-end machine learning – from data analysis to learning and inference. And with the huge performance gains of the new DGX, machine learning engineers will be able to outpace the exponentially growing size of AI data models. ”

The Nvidia DGX A100 systems combine eight new A100 GPUs with tensor cores and a total of 320GB of memory that can be used to train even the largest datasets for AI. The system also features the latest Nvidia Mellanox HDR 200Gbps high-speed interconnect. The press release, however, missed one important component that comes from main competitor AMD.

Inside the DGX A100 are two 64-core AMD Epyc processors, which Nvidia says offer 3.2x the number of cores. The previous generation used Intel Xeon, and the Epic processors from the toughest competitor AMD are clear signs of the performance and functionality gap between Intel and AMD.

When dealing with light workloads, the DGX A100 can be split into 56 separate work systems using the A100 Multi-Instance GPU feature. This will enable the enterprise to optimize computing power to accelerate individual workloads, including data analytics, learning, and inference, on a single, fully integrated software-defined platform.

The University of Florida is also planning to deploy DGX A100 systems to integrate AI across the entire learning platform to stimulate workforce.

Nvidia’s new AI system is now available through its network of partners around the world, starting at $ 199,000 (RUR 12,900,000 + VAT). Storage technology vendors including DDN Storage, Dell, IBM, NetApp, Pure Storage and Vast are also planning to integrate the DGX A100.
