Paper will replace plastic in Cake motorcycles? The most “eco BEV” in the spotlight

Cake from Sweden decided to start cooperation with PaperShell. Objective? Develop an electric motorcycle that is as environmentally friendly as possible by answering the question of whether paper will replace plastic in Cake bikes.

Electric motorcycles may not generate emissions in operation, but their production is quite the opposite

In order to replace plastic parts in motorcycles, Cake, in collaboration with PaperShell, will evaluate the potential hidden in a composite made of natural fibers. This one will resemble paper and will replace unspecified plastic elements in electric motorbikes, which are expected to hit the market in 2025.

Cake was founded to inspire the public to act on a zero emissions footprint, and that of course involves carefully researching the best possible materials for our electric motorbikes. We’re excited to partner with PaperShell and hope we can play a key role in finding a material that can minimize or even eliminate the use of conventional plastics in our bikes. It’s a collaboration that will ultimately benefit the entire automotive industry and beyond

Cake founder and CEO Stefan Ytterborn said.

This does not mean, however, that PaperShell does not have an appropriate portfolio, because in fact it already has developed 100% cellulose components, which are pressed or formed using a pumping bladder. At the end of their useful life, such components can be recycled in existing plants.

They are said to be as resistant to weather conditions as plastic and as durable as fiber composites, and at the same time more environmentally friendly than both of these materials with only 0.65 kg of CO2 emissions per kg of material, and not as much as 25.05 kg as in fiberglass case.
