Radeon RX 480 8gb Hashrate – Mining Cryptocurrency

Is it possible to overclock the GPU

Now a little about adjusting the video adapter to improve its performance. Overclocking the RX 480 is most often done with an emphasis on increasing the video memory frequency using MSI Afterburner up to 9 MHz. We could have raised the bar even further, but drivers and software cannot support this mode of operation, even utilities from ASUS and AMD (WattMan) do not help.

However, even with such a change in this indicator alone, the hash rate increases to 28-28.2 MH / s with an increase in energy consumption by no more than 10 W. Such overclocking will definitely be relevant when mining Ethereum.

It was not possible to overclock the frequency of the video adapter to the possible 1340 MHz. Of course, this is not so much important for the production of Ether as for other coins (for example, the same Zcash), but still unpleasant. Experienced users prefer to manually select the optimal indicators for each, for example, the maximum setting for Ethereum (30-31 MH / s) may look like this:

  • memory frequency – 2050-2220 MHz;
  • core frequency – 1200-1250 MHz;
  • Power Limit + 10 W to the standard value;
  • downvolt to -96;
  • timings on Samsung GDDR5 can be set to 2000;
  • BIOS is flashed to prevent hashrate drop by 2.5-3 MH / s when increasing the memory frequency.

You need to pay special attention to drivers. On the one hand, it is desirable that they are from the manufacturer and as relevant as possible. On the other hand, some newer “firewood” (for example, 17.1.1) perform much worse in mining than the older model (say, 16.11.5). Therefore, you must first read the reviews of other “miners” on the forums.

It is also important to properly organize the cooling of devices, finding a balance between the temperature of the GPU and the noise level of the coolers. If one or two GPUs are used, then the rotational speed of the blades can be set higher, but if the farm consists of 3-4 cards or more, then it is better to set the fan speed to 80%. This will keep the degree of heating of the equipment at the level of 70-72 degrees. With 24/7 operation, this is slightly more than necessary, therefore, if possible, it is worth considering options for additional cooling.
