Review and testing of processor LSS be quiet! Pure Loop 280 and be quiet! Pure Loop 360- Specs | CPU |

Introduction

Recently, liquid cooling systems began to appear more and more often in my tests. Fortunately, they are becoming more and more popular, and there is a reasonable explanation for this. To begin with, there are more and more different models on the market, they are produced by all companies.

More precisely, not all are produced, there are large OEM-firms that do the same thing for different brands. At first glance, there is nothing complicated there: any such device consists of a pump, radiator, water block and hoses. All these things are separately produced by many companies. However, custom CBOs have not gained much popularity due to the complexity of the assembly and the high cost. Fittings, reservoir, pump – such words can shock an unprepared user. Cut the hoses yourself, mount and connect everything – it’s almost like building a water supply or heating at home. The specifics are similar, only the sizes and equipment differ. Nevertheless, without gaining popularity, custom LSS remain the most effective.

Most modern cases are made with the expectation of using at least one radiator with fans, and there are those where you can easily put two, for example, on top and in front. Such LSS continue to be expensive and this is not surprising. There are models that are sold cheaper than tower air supercoolers, but their performance is appropriate (but noise, RGB lighting and dropsy are available).

There are serious models of reputable companies on the market, such as be quiet !, which offer their own vision of how it should be and how it should function. This is a well-known company, and its name speaks for itself, they say: “everything will be quiet.” This is often the case, since the firm itself is engaged in the development. She has her own fan models that have proven themselves well in the market. The only thing left to do is to find a pump, a water block, hoses and a radiator. Most likely, in the modern world with huge production capacities, such searches will be short-lived. By the way, you can even do something yourself, for example, mount on the processor.

Two be quiet! Models came to me for testing. Pure Loop. In principle, they are very similar and the differences can be counted on one hand. It has already been written above that there are few details in any LSS and this is no exception. As a rule, all models from one manufacturer in one line differ only in the size of the radiator. Also here. Be quiet! Pure Loop is available in four versions: 120, 240, 280 and 360mm. These numbers are the length of the radiator. And accordingly, the models, the index of which is divisible by 120, are equipped with fans with such a diagonal, and one – by 140 and, accordingly, is equipped with two larger fans. Otherwise, the fans are from the same family, and I will immediately disappoint connoisseurs of beauty – they are without backlighting.

So, today I will review the two older models and check how they handle the AMD Ryzen processor.

Since these are the most productive models, they should easily cope with the task. It will be interesting to compare them with each other and evaluate how much in such systems everything depends on the radiator area. And it is not yet clear what will happen to the noise. Something tells me that 140mm fans are usually quieter, but I don’t know how it will be in this case. Let’s find out!

Packaging and equipment

The boxes and packaging of the devices are very similar, so I will not consider them separately.

Let’s consider one of the LSS models using the be quiet! Pure Loop 280, and we will fix all the differences separately.

In terms of packaging, they are practically nonexistent, except in size. It is clear that the 360 mm modification is simply longer.

450x333  15 KB. Big one: 1000x741  50 KB

The packaging is large because miracles did not happen. The devices are non-separable and take up a lot of space inside, and they also require careful packaging and a special frame inside.

The external design is made in the style of the company. Minimum fun – maximum information. Therefore, here we will not see graphs or bright RGB backlighting. Everything is purely to the point.

Let’s look at the packaging from all sides.

Not all planes carry some information about the device. The top and bottom, and for some they may seem lateral, contain only the name of the manufacturer and model. In front, we see a large image of the device, but also some kind of hazy. There is a water block cover with the be quiet! Inscription, there is a radiator with fans, and the rest is not clearly traced.

On the opposite side of the box, we again see four large inserts describing the main components of the system. It is provided in English and German. Not in great detail, but it is intelligibly said about the pump, there is information about refueling, about the cap with the inscription and a few more words about the branded Pure Wings 2 fans.

On one of the sidewalls in several languages, including Russian, it is said that all detailed information about the device can be viewed by scanning the QR code above. Here it is, the lazy future, even in detail on the packaging you cannot really tell anything, only on the website. Although no, there is a table with characteristics on the opposite side. Perhaps I will repeat the manufacturer’s experiment and also allow myself to be lazy.

We get 311 x 138 mm (42,918 sq. Mm) opposed to 394 x 120 (47,280 sq. Mm). But that’s not all. Either way, 120mm diameter fans are faster and provide more flow. True, this affects the noise, it also becomes stronger.

It’s time to look inside.

Here we see a specially shaped cardboard tray for packaging a set of equipment. The large dimensions are explained by the fact that the equipment cannot be disassembled, there is a large radiator and long hoses. Here everything is located almost ready-made. You can only place the fans and the package inside separately, and stretch the device itself along the edge. Each individual component is individually packaged in a bag. Only the radiator and “small things” are additionally in the boxes.

Let’s see what the package includes:

It is very detailed and everything is described there to the smallest detail. Basically, it tells about the installation, and also lists the scope of delivery.

Device and features of LSS

All liquid cooling systems are often similar to each other, since the principle of operation is the same for them. Basically, the shape of the water block and the location of the pump are different. Radiators, fans and hoses are the same everywhere. In this case, the pump is located strangely.

450x302  22 KB. Big one: 1000x672  84 KB

There are mounting holes on the radiator frame on both sides because fans can be placed on either side, but the radiator itself can be fixed to the case only with leads inward, because they will not press against the wall.

Accordingly, it is better to install the fans on the side of the pipe outlets, and on the inflow or exhaust must be decided according to the situation. However, a few times I made a sandwich when the case frame found itself between the fans and the heatsink.

The fans are very efficient and quiet. The model is very popular and familiar, but with a certain specificity: the revs are increased relative to the base ones.

450x396  35 KB. Big one: 1000x881  115 KB

There is no ARGB lighting, so each fan has only one 4-pin PWM Fan connector. This applies to the 140 and 120 mm be quiet! Pure Wings 2.

There are no soft cushions in the corners, but there is no vibration either, because these are premium models and they are well balanced. The blades are embossed and there are nine of them.

Each fan is secured to the heatsink with four screws. The 360 mm radiator has three fans, the 280 mm version has two. Accordingly, the number of fastening screws in different sets is different.

450x185  18 KB. Big one: 1000x412  82 KB

The fans are powered via 4-pin connectors. The user has a wide choice in connection. For example, each fan can be connected separately to the motherboard and they will work independently. You can use the supplied splitter. It also allows the fans to be controlled independently of the pump.

Another cable comes from the pump and one from the water block. In the latter case, it is needed for the backlight to work, so it is optional.

450x396  23 KB. Big one: 1000x880  79 KB

The pump is installed here in the break of one hose closer to the radiator. It turns out such a weighty module, but separate and independent. In theory, it’s collapsible. Standard speed – 5500 rpm.

450x379  25 KB. Big one: 1000x843  94 KB

Do not be intimidated by these numbers, because the noise from the work is small – just over 30 dB. The design and the principle of its operation are not so unusual. This is a conventional circulation pump with a metal impeller. I did not disassemble it because there is an image on the site.

450x253  17 KB. Big one: 885x497  52 KB

There is no thermal interface on the water block itself. Instead, there is a protective sticker that must be removed before installation.

The surface is very smooth and almost mirror-like.

Тестирование двух СЖО be quiet! Pure Loop 280 и Pure Loop 360 проводилось со следующими компонентами:

  • Процессор: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X @ 4.3 ГГц при 1.3 В;
  • Материнская плата: ASUS Prime B550-Plus, версия BIOS 1401;
  • СЖО be quiet! Pure Loop 280 мм;

  • Видеокарта: ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1660 Ti (1500 / 1860 / 12002 МГц (ядро/boost/память));
  • Накопитель: SSD M.2: Samsung 981 1 Тбайт;

By the way, the manufacturer recorded a video with a part of the system assembly.

At first I decided that it would be necessary to fill the system, since there is a special fluid in the kit. However, by unscrewing the refueling screw, I realized that the system was full and did not need to be refilled. It should only be noted that the hole is small and when refueling it should be in the upper position.

Let’s evaluate the system operation in normal mode using utilities.

450x320  47 KB. Big one: 1200x852  292 KB

The fastening is reliable and simple. After assembling the system, we start and see how everything works. At the first start, there is no noise from the system. Usually there is a loud sound from pumping liquid along the circuit, but here it is absent.

The test was carried out immediately on an overclocked system.

The second LSS model works in a similar way. There are differences in noise, as the fans are smaller and their speed is higher. Also, the radiator itself is longer.

Otherwise, there is almost no difference, except in performance. It is clear that the larger model has better performance.

Everything is more or less decent here, and the noise level can be estimated using the video above. It is clear that the camera is close to the device, and in fact, the noise is a little less, but one way or another it is noticeable and the system cannot be called silent.

Both be quiet! Pure Loop is very effective. There is a difference between them, and it is noticeable, however, I would prefer the version with 140 mm fans – it is quieter. Obviously, to reduce the noise level, you need to use less revving turntables or reduce the speed of the standard ones.

The most important thing is that the pump pumped at maximum speed, and the fans can adjust the efficiency, although in the range of 1500-2000 rpm a strong difference was not observed.

The rotation speed can be controlled. We have already seen that the pump only has a 3-pin connector. Therefore, on the motherboard, it is controlled exactly like a pump through DC regulation.

As for the fans, they are PWM controlled. You can select several presets in the BIOS of the motherboard, but there was no difference between the Standard and Silent modes.

Conclusion

Despite the lack of trendy RGB lighting, I liked both LJO models. They may be noisy in abnormal mode, but this can be easily corrected by installing ordinary resistors for each fan. In the case of the 280mm version, this is even easier, since it has two fans and they are quieter in themselves. Yes, and with the 360 mm modification, this trick will work, but three resistors are already needed.

Both be quiet! It makes sense to take Pure Loop for a slight overclocking of the processor, which does not go beyond reasonable voltages. Above 1.4 V for AMD Ryzen, you need to look for something better, although it all depends on the load. If the application does not load all the cores by 100%, then the overclocking limits can be shifted at your own peril and risk. And if you do not overclock the assembled configuration and do a competent downvolting, you can get an almost silent system. Then under load the performance will be higher, the PC will become quieter and colder. In my opinion, this is more reasonable. Perhaps the best option would be to create two profiles for different tasks.

As silly as it may sound, the Pure Loop models cannot be fully attributed to maintenance-free water cooling systems. The manufacturer himself completes them with a bottle of refrigerant and provides for the possibility of refilling. The block with the pump is also taken out separately and is located in the break of the hose. This is the first step towards a next generation pump and fluid replaceable device.

Perhaps, soon we will come to the conclusion that unattended LSS will become serviceable, and the modules themselves can be replaced relatively simply without special skills and complex tools. I connected, disconnected, filled in, launched, and it continues to work. However, in the field of production of any devices there are certain trends and they are associated with their resource. If things are forever, who will buy new ones?

So, be quiet! presented models with excellent characteristics, also with the possibility of refueling. The ice has broken …
